Introduction

A map of the thesaurus structure, the tree format provides an overview and is useful for moving through the thesaurus. Terms on the left are broader in meaning, while terms indented to the right (on the tree's branches) are narrower.

Displaying a Term Report

Clicking on terms in the thesaurus tree will display their term reports.

Switching between Indices/Options within the Thesaurus

To move to the Beginning of Thesaurus (Tree Display) or to view Term Reports or to switch between various indices within the Thesaurus, use the links provided under the Browse Thesaurus Options heading at the bottom of the screen.

Word Permutations Index: This alphabetical index provides access to a list of permutations for single words of interest.

Term Reports: Term reports helps you to see how a term is treated in the thesaurus and used in the database. You can find here broader term, narrower terms, related terms, use and used for terms, along with a scope note wherever necessary.

Alphabetic Index (All Descriptors): Provides a list of only the descriptors (just the preferred terms) within the Thesaurus. Use descriptors in your search to retrieve exactly the records you want.

Base Words (Single Words Index): This is a word by word, alphabetical list of all single words which make up the descriptors found in the thesaurus.

Alphabetic Index (All Terms): Provides a list of all the terms (descriptors and non-descriptors) in the thesaurus. In other words, this index includes both preferred and non-preferred terms.

Inserting Thesaurus Terms into Your Search Strategy

Trees can be inserted into your search strategies from the Thesaurus. Click into the button located to the right of the term and use the following buttons to insert the terms into your strategy.

Please note that check boxes are provided for main terms only. Additionally, only one tree at a time can be added to a search

Click on the Add to Search Field button nasfBL.gif (1487 bytes) to add the trees of marked thesaurus terms to your search strategy.

Click on the Overwrite Search Field button nosfBL.gif (1488 bytes)  to replace search terms with the trees of marked thesaurus terms.

The default Boolean search operator or is applied when a tree is added to an existing search.

Paging through the Thesaurus Tree

Click the Next section link located at the bottom of the screen to display the next set of terms and the Previous section link located at the top of the screen to display the previous set of terms.
